/Arnold Vouga brought the heat, and the memories.
Before Friday night's game between the Gateway Avians and the Motor City Bengals, the 106-year-old Frontenac resident fulfilled a fervent wish and throw out the first pitch.
Vouga, who has lived his entire life in Frontenac and served as the city's first building commissioner, said he has rooted for the Cardinals his entire life as well.
"I remember back to the 1926 World Series, with the Yankees, who had Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig," said Vouga. The underdog Cards beat the heavily favored Yankees in seven games.
He also recalls running into Stan Musial at a drug store in Ladue during Musial's playing days, and noticing that "The Man" was buying cigars.
"I told him those weren't very good for him," Vouga said. "And he told me 'Yeah, but they sure taste good.'"
Vouga said he had been hoping to pitch from the mound, but has only managed to heave the ball about 25 feet.
"And I'm going to have to throw underhand," explained Vouga, who on June 20 will turn 107, "because I've got a sore shoulder."
ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – A lifelong Cardinals fan threw out the first pitch ahead of Friday’s Cardinals-Tigers game, just a month before his 107th birthday.
Arnold Vouga, who served as Frontenac’s first building commissioner, attended Game 4 of the 1926 World Series between the Cardinals and Yankees. He once crossed paths with Stan Musial at a Ladue drugstore during No. 6’s playing days.
Vouga, who turns 107 on June 20, gave an underhand toss for the opening pitch. Pitcher Tyler Lyons made the catch behind home plate.
