Michigan woman convert to Islam dies in Syria fighting for opposition

A 33-year-old Michigan woman and convert to Islam has been killed in Syria while fighting with opposition forces against the government of President Bashar al-Assad in the country's civil war, her family said on Thursday.
The woman's aunt told Reuters that the FBI had informed her on Thursday afternoon of the death of her niece, Nicole Mansfield of Flint, but said she did not have the details of how she died.
"I'm just devastated," said the aunt, Monica Mansfield Speelman. "Evidently, she was fighting with opposition forces."
Speelman said Mansfield, a single mother of an 18-year-old daughter, had converted to Islam about five years ago but that she did not know when her niece had traveled to Syria.
"I didn't think she would stoop that low to go over there and try to harm anybody," Speelman said of her niece, who she said had worked at a group home.
A U.S. State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, had earlier told Reuters that Washington was working via the Czech Republic mission in Syria to get more information.
"As we do in all such cases, we are working through our Czech protecting power in Syria to obtain more information, and we appreciate the efforts of the Czech mission on behalf of our citizens," the official said. He added that U.S. authorities could not comment further "because of privacy considerations."

Last Living Man Born in 19th Century Likely Has Genes to Thank

Jiroemon Kimura, the oldest living man, celebrated his 116th birthday this past Friday. Born in 1897, Kimura is the last man alive born in the 19th century, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The resident of Kyotango, Japan, is also the oldest man in verified history.
Should Kimura be interested, there are plenty lovely ladies in his age group to choose from. The Gerontology Research Group at UCLA lists 21 women born before New Year's Day in 1901 who are still alive and well. And the current world's oldest living woman, 115-year-old Misao Okawa, also lives in Japan.
These golden agers are part of an elite group of seniors who have made it to their 110 th birthday and beyond. Dr. Tom Perls, the director of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University Medical Center, estimates there are approximately 200-300 of these "supercentenarians" in the world.
So what's the secret to living long enough to blow out at least 110 candles on your birthday cake?
"People who live to that age are incredibly homogeneous, as if they have some key genetic features in common that get them to an incredibly old age," Perls said.
One commonality Perls' studies have found: Approximately 90 percent of superagers are women. He speculates that having two X chromosomes offers a certain amount of protection from disease and disability.
"If one chromosome has some less-than-desirable aging or disease genetic variance, women seem to have the ability to choose a variant on the other chromosome that is more conducive to survival," he explained.
One of Perls' studies also showed that women who conceived naturally and carried a baby to full term after age 40 are at least four times more likely than average to live to the age of 100.
As for living a clean lifestyle, Perls said the research is mixed, with one study showing approximately 20 percent of those over the age of 103 practicing truly horrendous lifelong health habits including smoking, drinking, eating junk food and avoiding exercise.
Perls recalled that the oldest woman on record, Frenchwoman Madame Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122, smoked heavily until she was 100 years old and continued to smoke one cigarette a day thereafter. Perls wondered if she would have lived even longer had she kicked the habit.
However, Perls stressed that it is very rare to find a smoker who makes it past the century mark. The same holds truly of anyone who is even mildly overweight.
Perls concedes supercentenarians, with their superior anti-aging genes, probably aren't the best lifestyle role models. Better to look to the Seventh Day Adventists, he said, a religious group whose active, vegetarian, highly social lifestyle appears to promote longevity.
"They live to an average age of 88, versus an average 78 for the rest of us," he pointed out.

Burger King Employee Foils Robbery by Stealing Thieves’ Getaway Car

A fast food employee is being lauded by police for his fast thinking after foiling a robbery at a Burger King in Stockton, Calif.
As two hamburlgars stormed the restaurant brandishing guns and demanding cash, an employee snuck out a back door, according to KOVR-TV in Sacramento.
The employee found the thieves’ idling getaway vehicle in the parking lot, hopped in and drove off, stashing the car around the block.
“I haven’t heard of any employee actually leaving a business, getting inside the suspect vehicle and trying to hide it,” Stockton officer Joe Silva told reporters.
When the thieves realized their car had been taken, then took off on foot and hid in a nearby field.
Police soon found the two suspects, Gabriel Gonzalez and Jeremy Lovitt, and arrested them. They’ve been charged with armed robbery.

Poems by Jean Dament :

Lost in the 50's

As a child in the 50's I remember a time;
When lots could be bought for simply a dime,
Chips, pop, milk & comic books;
And sometimes a nickel was all it took,
Even with 1 or 2 cents,
We could buy bags of licorice, black balls & gum...that's all we spent,
At the local corner store we were known by our first name;
Where personalized service was the name of the game,
They'd offer our parents cash-credit with a smile;
And trusted them to pay it back in a short while,
You could buy fresh slices of cold meat;
And ice cream was wrapped in paper rolls all so! neat.

Back in the 50's dads went to work away from home;
While moms stayed home...sometimes alone,
Eggs, milk, ice, & coal were delivered right to your door;
And even all your groceries....you couldn't ask for more,
The mailman knew me well;
And I thought he too was swell,
We would follow the milkman around with his horse drawn cart,
But our parents weren't sure that was very smart,
Big blocks of ice would be delivered to one's door too;
While we begged the iceman on hot summer days for chunks, before he was through,
These were fun times that we lived in back then;
And now my memories often go back to.... when.

    Zoo worker dies after tiger attack

    A British zoo worker who was injured in a tiger attack at an animal park near Dalton-in-Furness has died, police said Friday.
    Sarah McClay, 24, from the Barrow area, was attacked by a tiger within its enclosure Friday afternoon, Cumbria police said. The woman was taken by air ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital after the attack at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, but she did not survive.
    McClay had suffered head and neck injuries, the BBC reported.
    Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the attack.
    "Sarah's family are very shocked and distressed and request that they have privacy as they try to come to terms with their loss," the police statement read.
    The public was not at risk during the attack, officials said. The wildlife park, which, according to the BBC, opened in 1994 and has both Siberian and Sumatran tigers, closed early Friday.

    Poem Winter

    Winter Time
    Winter has come with his cold breeze
    Oh how I missed the long nights and cold air
    Noble winter do as whatever you please

    Some bees hide in their trees
    The fauna and flora in winter so rare
    Winter has come with his cold breeze

    You all mighty of all season that freeze the seas
    Warm us with your arctic flare
    Noble winter do as whatever you please

    Oh great winter now that I m on my knees
    The snow might have something to spare
    Winter has come with his cold breeze

    Yesterday was like a gentle kiss
    There where so many stars to stare
    Noble winter do as whatever you please

    Winter has come with his cold breeze
    Noble winter do as whatever you please

    A Boy Named Sue by Shel Silverstein

    A Boy Named Sue

     Well, my daddy left home when I was three,
    and he didn't leave much to Ma and me,
    just this old guitar and a bottle of booze.
    Now I don't blame him because he run and hid,
    but the meanest thing that he ever did was
    before he left he went and named me Sue.

    Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke,
    and it got lots of laughs from a lot of folks,
    it seems I had to fight my whole life through.
    Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
    and some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head,
    I tell you, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

    Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean.
    My fist got hard and my wits got keen.
    Roamed from town to town to hide my shame,
    but I made me a vow to the moon and the stars,
    I'd search the honky tonks and bars and kill
    that man that gave me that awful name.

    But it was Gatlinburg in mid July and I had
    just hit town and my throat was dry.
    I'd thought i'd stop and have myself a brew.
    At an old saloon in a street of mud
    and at a table dealing stud sat the dirty,
    mangy dog that named me Sue.

    Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
    from a worn-out picture that my mother had
    and I knew the scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
    He was big and bent and gray and old
    and I looked at him and my blood ran cold,
    and I said, "My name is Sue. How do you do?
    Now you're gonna die." Yeah, that's what I told him.

    Well, I hit him right between the eyes and he went down
    but to my surprise he came up with a knife
    and cut off a piece of my ear. But I busted a chair
    right across his teeth. And we crashed through
    the wall and into the street kicking and a-gouging
    in the mud and the blood and the beer.

    I tell you I've fought tougher men but I really can't remember when.
    He kicked like a mule and bit like a crocodile.
    I heard him laughin' and then I heard him cussin',
    he went for his gun and I pulled mine first.
    He stood there looking at me and I saw him smile.

    And he said, "Son, this world is rough and if
    a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
    and I knew I wouldn't be there to help you along.
    So I gave you that name and I said 'Goodbye'.
    I knew you'd have to get tough or die. And it's
    that name that helped to make you strong."

    Yeah, he said, "Now you have just fought one
    helluva fight, and I know you hate me and you've
    got the right to kill me now and I wouldn't blame you
    if you do. But you ought to thank me
    before I die for the gravel in your guts and the spit
    in your eye because I'm the nut that named you Sue."
    Yeah, what could I do? What could I do?

    I got all choked up and I threw down my gun,
    called him pa and he called me a son,
    and I came away with a different point of view
    and I think about him now and then.
    Every time I tried, every time I win and if I
    ever have a son I think I am gonna name him
    Bill or George - anything but Sue.

    Poem Annabel Lee

    Annabel Lee

    It was many and many a year ago
    In a kingdom by the sea
    That a maiden there lived whom you may know
    By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
    And this maiden she lived with no other thought
    Than to love and be loved by me.

    I was a child and she was a child
    In this kingdom by the sea;
    But we loved with a love that was more than love-
    I and my Annabel Lee;
    With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
    Coveted her and me.

    And this was the reason that long ago
    In this kingdom by the sea
    A wind blew out of a cloud chilling
    My beautiful Annabel Lee;
    So that her highborn kinsman came
    And bore her away from me
    To shut her up in a sepulchre
    In this kingdom by the sea.

    The angels not half so happy in heaven
    Went envying her and me-
    Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know
    In this kingdom by the sea)
    That the wind came out of the cloud by night
    Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

    But our love it was stronger by far than the love
    Of those who were older than we-
    Of many far wiser than we-
    And neither the angels in heaven above
    Nor the demons down under the sea
    Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

    For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
    And so all the night-tide I lie down by the side
    Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride
    In the sepulchre there by the sea
    In her tomb by the sounding sea.

    Gladiolus Bulb Planting

    Gladiola are one of the more majestic flowering bulbs. Herbaceous perennial bulbs that overwinter in temperate and tropical climes and are hardy in USDA Zones 8a through 10b, gladiola bloom in early and mid-summer in most climates. The flower spikes grow on thick stalks up to 48 inches in height, with lower foliage that is slim flat, tapered and pale to medium green. Does this Spark an idea?

    Sun Exposure and Soil Requirements

    • Gladiola thrive in full sun but will tolerate a few hours of daily shade or dappled sunlight. Prepare a planting bed of well-tilled, rich, moist, well-drained soil with a mildly acidic to neutral pH between 6.1 and 6.5. If you need to amend the soil to bump up the acidity, mix in some sphagnum peat moss or gypsum.

    Bulb Placement and Mulch

    • Gladiolus bulbs should be planted in early to mid-spring after all threats of frost have passed. Space bulbs at intervals of 6 to 9 inches and at a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Water the bulbs at planting, then do not water again until a few inches of green shoots begin to emerge through the soil. Mulch with shredded bark or compost to preserve moisture

    Watering and Fertilizing Requirements

    • Continually observe soil moisture levels throughout the season, watering when the soil feels slightly dry an inch or so down. You want moist soil, but overly wet dirt can easily rot the bulbs. Fertilize once or twice a month with a good quality, balanced and water-soluble formula according to the manufacturer's instructions.
      When gladiolus blooms fade, cease feeding and reduce watering by at least half to preserve the bulbs for next year and prevent rot.

    Women Sexual Over-Drive Confessions

    My husband works 10 hour shifts, 6 days a week. We are both tired, stressed, sore, and overworked by the end of the day. But after our daughter has gone to bed, I like to set aside everything and be intimate with my husband. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the same ideas. He's too tired, or too sore, or just "not in the mood." We are a recently married couple, in our late 20's. We should still have a decent sexual drive. It's frustrating to me that he isn't on the same page as me when it comes to sex.

    It's the main argument in our marriage. I can't understand how six or seven days can go by, and sex just never happens. No woman wants to always take the initiative ... If I didn't speak up, I'm sure a month could just pass by without any intimacy at all. I would be happiest with intimate contact every day of the week, but I've tried to compromise to every other day. But even that doesn't occur without a reminder. I'm learning to accept that I am just going to have to be the aggressor 95 percent of the time.

    [I] have had a difference in desire from my husband for about the last 11 years or more. We have sex a couple of times a year and sometimes it might be twice a week for a week and then nothing for months at a time. I have tried making his favorite meals, doing a week's worth of really nice things to get him in a happy state of mind, wearing sexy clothes and lingerie -- it doesn't work. I have no idea what turns him on. My husband doesn't respond to pressure, hates talking about it and it is a cause of stress on our marriage. He bought me a vibrator so I would be happy and leave him alone. It doesn't fill the need, although sometimes I just enjoy the pleasure without the hassle and have to fantasize that my husband enjoys pleasing me.

    He wouldn't have sex while I was pregnant with each of our children. Talk about a long nine plus months. It was well over a year if no sex with our last child. Now that we have completed my our family I don't know if we will ever have sex again. He says his work is done ... We are completely happy otherwise. In total we have been together 20 years and married almost 11. We are each others' best friend just not compatible lovers
