Tucker, Vernon L.
Killed in a small plane crash on May 31, 2004 in Sonora, California. Born October 10, 1918, in Witchita, Kansas, Vern attended MIT and worked for McDonnell Douglas for 50 years as an avionics expert.
His specialty was the development of radar communication systems and computers. He worked with aircraft designers who were responsible for the legendary SBD "DAUNTLESS", among other airplanes. He also worked in the design of anti-submarine warfare systems and carrier-based aircraft. Vern was a member of the National Security Industrial Association and The Air Force Association of Old Crows. An experienced pilot, he was a member of the Aircraft Pilots and Owners Association.
He is survived by his wife, Ragnhild; his brother, Robert Tucker; sons, Glen (Gail), Peter, and daughter, Ann Jones (Tony); seven grandchildren and three stepchildren. Vern resided in Manhattan Beach for 50 years, raising a family with Clare Tucker, who died in 1989.
In retirement, he relocated to Gardnerville, Nevada. He and his wife Ragnhild traveled extensively and enjoyed their time with family and friends.
A Memorial Service is scheduled at American Martyrs Church in Manhattan Beach on June 21, 2004 at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
