Miss America 2012 winner: Miss Wisconsin Laura Kaeppeler tops Miss America
 contestants 2012
Laura Kaeppeler, Miss Wisconsin 2011, is a 2010 graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha with a degree in Music and an emphasis in Vocal Performance, with plans to pursue a master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Kaeppeler, 23, will compete for the title of Miss America 2012 at the national pageant televised on ABC in January 2012. Kaeppler is a talented vocalist and performs an operatic aria to “Il Bacio” for competition. Her year of service focuses on her platform, a program she developed and is promoting throughout the state -- “Circles of Support - Mentoring Teens of Incarcerated Parents.” She is the owner of a private music studio and instructor of voice and piano lessons. Kaeppeler is a life-long suffering Cubs fan, enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and taking care of her one-year old puppy, Smokey. More information on Laura can be found at www.misswisconsin.com or

A 23-year-old beauty queen from Kenosha, Wis., won the Miss America pageant Saturday in Las Vegas after singing opera and strutting in a white bikini and black beaded evening gown.
Laura Kaeppeler also had to answer a question about whether beauty queens should declare their politics.
"Miss America represents everyone, so I think the message to political candidates is that they represent everyone as well," she said. "And so in these economic times, we need to be looking forward to what America needs, and I think Miss America needs to represent all."
Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson came in second, while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte placed third.
Kaeppeler wins a $50,000 scholarship and gets the title for one year. Her platform during the competition was supporting and mentoring children of incarcerated parents — a topic close to her heart.
Kaeppeler's father, Jeff Kaeppeler, told The Associated Press he served 18 months in federal prison for mail fraud.
He said when his daughter approached the family about making the personal topic her chosen platform, they supported it even though they knew it would be discussed publicly.
"We've seen this come full circle," he said.
Jeff Kaeppeler said his daughter's win on Saturday night was the best day of his life. He attended the event in a black tuxedo with a baby blue vest and bow tie.
"It taught us that God can turn everything into good if you let him," he said.
Laura Kaeppeler's hometown of roughly 97,000 people, Kenosha, is about 40 miles south of Milwaukee.
She majored in music and vocal performance at a private Lutheran liberal arts college in Kenosha, and told pageant officials she planned to obtain a master's degree in speech and language pathology and become a speech therapist.
Kaeppeler was crowned the new Miss America by a panel of seven judges during a live telecast on ABC. The event was the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
As the new Miss America, Kaeppeler will spend the next year touring the country to speak to different groups and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network, the Miss America Organization's official charity.
Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska won Miss America last year at age 17 to become the pageant's youngest winner ever. She said contestants' nerves likely were at their highest point just before the pageant.

Pastors Steal and Bilk Money from Parishioners

Published 06:33 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012

A Seattle-area pastor is scheduled to plead guilty Friday to federal charges that he bilked two dozen people out of at least $1.6 million.
Anthony C. Morris resigned last week from the New Covenant Christian Center, and federal prosecutors charged him with wire fraud and money laundering Tuesday. They say that since 2003 he's run a Ponzi scheme in which he told people he'd invest their money and get them quick, profitable returns.
His attorney, Jessica Riley of Seattle, tells The Associated Press he's been cooperating and will plead guilty to both charges and that he hopes to repay as many of his victims as possible.
The New Covenant Christian Center was previously located in Seattle and Renton, but now operates out of a community center in Tukwila.
The case was investigated by special agents of the IRS criminal investigation division and the FBI.

Lion and Little Girl Stare at the zoo

Behind the window glass.

Sofia Walker may be the bravest little girl ever to have visited the Wellington Zoo in New Zealand, but the 3-year-old's recent stare-down with a large African lion was undoubtedly unnerving to her her mother, who was watching from nearby. To be sure, not many adults could maintain this kind of poise with the King of Beasts a mere inches away, face to face, pawing at the glass in flurries. Sofia had climbed onto a small platform in front of where the lion was beginning to feed. "He walked up to the glass and this is the surprise reaction," said her father, Julian. "This went on for five minutes and I'm very proud of my daughter." Would you be this brave?

Bloggers and news sites have compared the video of three-year-old Sofia Walker facing down the giant cat to a modern-day Narnia, praising the little girl for her courage.

The footage shows the toddler facing down Wellington's Zoo's male lion Malik, as he paws at thick glass to try to scare her away from his food.

Sofia, unfazed, continues to stand on the viewing platform throughout the performance, only pausing to ask her mother a question.

"What's he telling me mama", Sofia asks. Her mother replies "He's telling you to get down."
