Richard Strauss

Richard Strauss

June 11, 1864 - September 8, 1949
born in Munich, Germany, composed during the Romantic period
Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was one of the major composers and conductors of the first half of the 20th century. Although his early operas Salome and Elektra incorporated elements of modernism, his aesthetic and musical language were essentially lyrical and post-Romantic, and remained so until the end of his life. Over his long and productive career he primarily worked in large orchestral forms such as tone poems, and in vocal music, especially operas and songs. Among his best-known works are the tone poems Also Sprach Zarathustra and Ein Heldenleben, the operas Der Rosenkavalier and Ariadne auf Naxos, and the Four Last Songs. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
