The national holiday known as Columbus Day is named after Christopher Columbus the explorer. Columbus Day is October 12, 2011. However, since 1971, Columbus Day has been observed on the second Monday of October, which means this year, Columbus Day is observed on Monday, October 10, 2011 in Rhode Island, as well as most of the United States. Columbus Day as we know it now, became a federal holiday in 1934.
