Jewish Sharia Law in Los Angeles the Mesira Telmudic Teaching
In a Los Angeles courtroom, the federal justice system is colliding with one of the most vexing areas of Jewish law.
Rabbi Moshe Zigelman, 64, already has spent two years in jail in a tax-fraud and money-laundering case that also saw the grand rabbi of the Spinka Chasidic sect sent to prison. The scheme involved soliciting large tax-deductible donations and secretly funneling most of the money back to the donors.
Now federal prosecutors are threatening more jail time for Zigelman, the Spinka rebbe’s personal secretary, who is refusing to testify and implicate others before a grand jury.
Zigelman’s lawyers say that his religious convictions do not allow him to testify. They point to the laws of mesira, the Talmudic prohibition against a Jew informing on another Jew to non-Jewish authorities. In modern terms, it’s a sort of Jewish no-snitching rule.
The concept of mesira, which literally means “delivery,” dates back to periods when governments often were hostile to Jews and delivering a Jew to the authorities could lead to an injustice and even death.
The rules of mesira still carry force within the Orthodox world, owing both to the inviolability of the concept’s talmudic origins and the insular nature of many Orthodox communities. But they are also the subject of debate over whether the prohibition applies in a modern democracy that prides itself on due process and civil rights.
“The question of the parameters of the prohibition of mesira remains a dispute about how to apply it in a just democracy,” said Rabbi Michael Broyde, a law professor at Emory University.
Rabbinical authorities are split on the issue, depending in large part on where they sit on the Orthodox spectrum. The issue is so sensitive that some religious leaders are reluctant to publicly discuss it, with many recognizing that the topic has the potential to adversely affect the way Jews are perceived

Shoshana Hebshi-Holt You are not Allowed to Have Dark Skin Take-off your Clothes Frontier Airlines
On Sunday afternoon, news broke that fighter jets had been scrambled to escort two planes — one bound for Detroit, the other for New York. It was, subconsciously at least, what many had been expecting: a terrorist attempt on the anniversary of 9/11.
When the planes landed the fears turned out to be unfounded. Three passengers were detained in Detroit and later let go after questioning. In New York, the on-board air marshal determined that the incident was not terror-related before the plane landed.
One woman, however, did not see the experience as particularly funny. Shoshana Hebshi-Holt boarded a Frontier Airlines flight Sunday after a weekend celebrating her sister’s birthday in California. The 35-year-old mother of 6-year-old twins was hoping to make it home in time for dinner.
Instead, she wound up handcuffed, strip-searched and questioned as a possible terrorist.
Much to her shock, the cops came to her row and handcuffed her and the two men. In the police car on the tarmac,
After she was strip-searched and questioned and held in a cell, the authorities let her go to muse over what had happened to her country.
Hebshi-Holt was not the only Arab-American to take to the web after experiencing backlash on Sunday. A Texas-based Arab-American wrote on Yelp after a bar in Houston drew a plane flying toward
I've never seen a Jew and an Arab truly get along. My Jewish mother and Saudi father divorced when I was five, and are just now, twenty-one years later, able to have civil, at times friendly, discourse. But they once loved each other very deeply, and I believe they still do on some level. They share an underlying understanding of the person underneath the Arab or Jewish skin they were born into and of the beliefs and values each holds because of their respective upbringings.
I was brought up with both cultures, though the Jewish side had a decidedly stronger presence. But I know the struggle of sympathizing with both and being unable to side with either. Even during my Bat Mitzvah, when I assumed the privileges and obligations of an adult Jew, my dad left after the rabbi made what he perceived as an anti-Arab comment.
I haven't been to a High Holy Day service in a while--probably five or six years. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, were always torturous for me to sit through during my pre-college youth, before I could choose whether or not to attend.

Sherifview Poem "The Autumn Month Melody"
The hot summer days have rolled and slipped by
The cool autumn months have once again arrived
The majestic spirit permeates the land
The sun far away blaze above the horizon
It sends gentle warmth to the peaceful hamlets
The colorful trees adorn the valleys, mountains that hug the skies
The jolly trees are flamed with colors
Crowned in Red, yellow and brown.
The brisk wind blows over the meadows
The tall trees bow gently in grace.
The tree branches hiss, swing and sway.
The cool wind sweeps the plains and fields
The leaves quiver, shake and fly away
The green pastures are dotted with a mosaic of scattered leaves
The singing birds, playful beavers, silver fish in the water streams bring joy
The sun in its majestic journey climbs the vast skies
The autumn patchy clouds cast their shadows on the land
All they paint an awesome picture of beauty, love and harmony
You can hear the music and melodies of the autumn months

The Mysterous Suicide of Russell Armstrong
In one of the final interviews Russell Armstrong gave before hanging himself, the The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star went off on the series that made him famous and, it's clear at this point, led to his demise.
"Everything you see on that show is bullsh-t," Armstrong told The Fix. "Those Bravo bastards take every little argument out of context and magnify it for the cameras."
On Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise, a main character is affluence. It takes all forms: private planes, posh mansions, thousand-dollar shopping sprees. And it seemed Russell Armstrong and his wife, Taylor, who appeared on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," had been living up to the lifestyle. Last season, Taylor threw a $60,000 party for their then-4-year-old daughter, frequently conferred with a private stylist and devoted much of her free time to philanthropy.
